Official BEA PCE inflation for January(!) is coming out this Friday, Mar 13, ahead of the FOMC meeting next week.
Last PCE and Core PCE surprised to the upside:
- BEA PCE: 2.9% (up from 2.8%)
- BEA Core PCE: 3% (up from 2.8%)
We obtain an alternative daily PCE index by mapping our massive price data to the BEA's PCE categories and weights:
- Today's Truflation PCE: 1.89%
- Today's Truflation Core PCE: 1.99%
Our PCE has also been trending up recently, after a significant cooling in January and February
PCE (Personal Consumption Expenditures index), is the Federal Reserve's preferred gauge of inflation, especially the core PCE, which excludes food and energy.
The Fed pays more attention to the PCE than the CPI, despite both indices being published with significant delays.
For example, the January PCE data is being released this Friday, which means PCE will be one month behind the already-lagging BLS CPI, which in turn lags behind Truflation's data by about 45 days.
